AMREL announced a new solid-state, multimodal, biometric moduleAMREL Biometric Solution  utilizing the Vista ViCAM® III Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). This durable, light-weight biometric module makes use of a single-circuit ASIC to support:

  • Dual iris image capture by a single high-resolution glass lens and with one shot
  • 2 finger/rolled electroluminescent sensor that is SAP 45 – Appendix F compliant
  • Quality facial images even in low light environments
  • Voice capture/recognition

“Our biometric module was based on information gathered from the Army’s Biometric Task Force as well as end-user feedback from events, such as TNT & BFEX Field Experimentation,” explained Richard Lane, Vice President of AMREL.  “It was clear that warfighter and Homeland Security professionals need a small, rugged, and power-thrifty biometric solution.”

A key to developing this tough, energy-efficient biometric module was Vista Imaging’s ViCAM III Digital Imaging Engine. Utilizing the single ASIC circuit enabled a significant reduction in moving parts; an important consideration when operating in cold weather and remote locations where repair is difficult. The integrated functionality allows the biometric module to be a compact, easily transportable unit. In addition, the efficiency of the single circuit design extends battery life, a critical issue for warfighters, who may carry up to 35 pounds of batteries on a typical mission.

“This solid-state biometric module reflects AMREL’s extensive experience in building mobile, rugged, solutions,” states Mr. Lane.  “Not only does it meet MIL-STD 810G, but it’s fully field-expedient. In other words, this module can be added or removed from a computer platform by non-specialist personnel using ordinary tools in just minutes.”

Mr. Lane noted that AMREL’s popular Flexpedient® Solutions have successfully used similar application modules for command & control of unmanned systems, targeting solutions, communications, as well as toxic & explosive gas detection.
