Seven Questions for your Vehicle Mount Computer (VMC)

Don’t get stuck with a VMC solution that doesn’t meet your needs. Drawing on their experience in supplying
VMCs for the toughest and most critical missions in the world, the AMREL experts discuss
seven key questions that you should ask when buying a rugged vehicle mount computer solution.

How visible is the display?

Bright light can washout your display and glare can render it illegible. Good visibility features are critical for your vehicle computer solution.

Superb Visibility

Look for:

  • Sunlight readable 1200 nit display
  • Anti-reflection touchscreen

What about moisture on the display?

Moisture can fog up even the brightest display. Make sure your VMC display can be seen in all environments, even cold and moist ones.

Defroster Function

Look for:

  • Screen defroster option

Optional screen defroster enables operation in outdoor and cold storage environments.

Is your Vehicle Mount Computer truly rugged?

Reliable operation is especially important for VMC applications, which often operate in remote and demanding environments. For some VMC solutions, their so-called “ruggedness” is nothing more than a marketing gimmick. Be sure your VMC is truly tough.

Genuine Ruggedness

Look for:

  • MIL-STD 810G & IP-66 certifications. These are the most important environmental standards.
  • VMCs built rugged from the ground up. Avoid ordinary commercial VMCs that someone “hardened” with superficial methods.
  • VMC solution supplier with rugged experience. Expertise can be important in designing a solution that will not break down the first day.

How good is the power management?

Not all Vehicle Mount PCs will work with all vehicles. Connecting a VMC to a vehicle requires DC power.  When selecting a VMC, please ensure your vehicle’s voltage range is compatible with the VMC.  Our VMCs accept a wide range of DC voltage input (9 to 60 DC), including the common voltages of 12/24/48VDC. Also, look for an ignition sense with delay on/off settings; this can simplify operation of the vehicle computer.

Smart Power Management

Look for:

  1. Compatible power requirements
  2. Smart power management
  3. Power saving & safety features
  • Wide power input for diversified requirements:
12/24/48 VDC nominal (voltage range: 9 to 60 VDC)
  • Ignition sense support with delay on/off setting
  • Hand-rotate connector prevents loose power cords

Built-in battery pack as UPS

  • Supports 1.5 hours working time
  • Prevents damage from sudden power loss
  • ISO-7637-2 compliant power design

What are the wireless options?

Since VMCs operate on the move in remote locations, wireless capabilities are especially important. Without multiple wireless options, your VMC is nothing more than a sophisticated brick.

Seamless Communications

Look for:

  • A full suite of wireless options.
Remember, you want choices, not problems.
  • Seamless communications.

  • Gigabit Wi-Fi
    – Intel 802.11ac Wi-Fi solution supports 2.4 GHz  & 5 GHz bands
  • Bluetooth
    – Bluetooth 4.0 standard including: Bluetooth 3.0 High Speed Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy (BLE)
  • Optional GPS
    – GPS, QZSS, or GLONASS
  • Optional WWAN (Reserved)
    – via internal mini Card

Does it have a dedicated software utility?

Essential VMC tasks include setup, testing, verification, configuration, and updating. A properly designed software utility can go along way toward minimizing the hassle of important operations.

Dedicated Software

Look for:

A dedicated, fully functional software utility that is not a pain in the neck to use.

  • DashON – System utility for device configuration
    – DashON for easy setup, test & verification

    – SDK for quick application development

  • Over the air update

    – Remote update utility & application
    – Over-the-air update saves time & resources in field

What are the peripherals & platform choices?

Don’t change your requirements to fit a solution; get a rugged VMC solution that fits your requirements. The right cable or the right display size can make all the difference in the world.

Peripherals

Look for:

  • A full selection of appropriate peripherals and mounting solutions

  • A choice of display sizes
