The development and testing of the capability of robots within an immersive environment could be a real move forward. The Blue Room (see web site) is a controlled environment and moves beyond computer screens to deliver a true sense of perspective. This would be an excellent addition to any development programme in robotics.
Great post, thanks for sharing. I fully agree with the need for 3D displays and stereo cameras. I’ve seen inexperienced UGV operators attempt to manipulate an object with their robotic arm and discover that the object is just out of reach. Operators have to “learn” depth perception from their monocular displays rather than simply “seeing” depth with 3D displays. I’ve also seen operators drive over IEDs during training simply because they lost their proprioception or place in the world. Situational awareness really can be improved with stereoscopic and 3D mapping tools.
